Introduction

In close collaboration with INFITT ("The International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil), the AU-KBC Research Centre of the Anna University, Chennai is organizing an international virtual conference in the area of Tamil Computing, scheduled for 12-14 March 2021.

This workshop – Tamil Computing – Tools & Applications (TaCTA 2021, virtual, in view of the current coronavirus restrictions) will deviate from the customary practice (guides presenting their work) and have young researchers present their work themselves. We believe that such opportunities will promote networking and collaboration amongst them. We encourage active participation of young researchers in academia (graduate students at Masters' or Doctoral programs and senior undergraduates on projects work) and industry (those who got their last degree in recent years (age limit 35 years).
The workshop will cover all key basic and applied domains of Tamil Language Technology (Tamil Computing) Development. Researchers who are involved in research in one or more areas of following keywords are strongly encouraged to submit a short 2 page outline of the work they would like to present orally: Basic tools of NLP (grammatical analysis, morphological and syntax analysis, tokenization, stemming, lemmatization, POS tagging, parsing, semantic and sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, …), smart word processing (text editors with spelling, grammar correction), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Machine Translation, Search engines, Corpus Linguistics (text, speech and parallel corpora, lexical e-resources, e-dictionary, digital library, Applications in the form of Chatbots, virtual assistant, assistive technologies for the physically challenged, Robotics and AI, ...
In addition to the paper presentations by the research students, the workshop will also feature invited speakers from Industry as well as propositions on various research projects for interested students to take up.

We are pleased to announce that, three attractive prizes (total cash value of Rs 60,000) will be awarded to the best paper(s) presented at this young researchers' conference.

Call for Papers

A call is made here inviting young researchers (age limit 35 Years) involved in different aspects of Tamil Computing and Information Technology to send their paper for possible presentation in one of the technical sessions of the conference. The content should be an original piece of work. All papers will undergo peer-review and the decisions of the Program Committee on the acceptance will be final. Best papers and research work will be recognized with special certificates and Cash prizes ( Three Cash Prizes of Total value Rs. 60,000 ) .

This conference will address recent advances and challenges in all key areas of Tamil Computing and IT, particularly on applications with clear deliverables.
The following is a non-exclusive list of topics on which papers are invited:
  • Natural Language Processing in Tamil (morphology, syntax, semantics, POS taggers, parsing, phonology, corpus linguistics, …)
  • Machine Translation of texts between Tamil and English and other Indian languages
  • Text-to-Speech, Voice recognition, and Speech corpora, particularly in applications for physically challenged (“assistive technologies)
  • Search Engines, text analytics and data mining in “big data” for Tamil content
  • Tamil enabling in portable devices and Tamil apps for use on Android and iOS devices
  • Open Source Tamil software and Tamil Localization of CMS and other packages
